EMBA SPECIAL EVENT WINNERS

NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS (NAP)

The annual North American Pairs (formerly North American Open Pairs or NAOP) is an annual District-level event. Pairs play in local club “qualifying” games in June and July. Those who score in the top half of their field or flight (or at least 50%)  are eligible to advance to the October District finals, held in Sturbridge MA. First, second and first place winners of the district event qualify to play in the national finals held during the Spring NABC in March of the following year. First and second place winners at the district level receive significant cash awards to compete in the national finals of the event.

TOM WILDER FLIGHTED PAIRS

The Thomas Wilder Flighted Championship commemorates a man whose contributions to EMBA were significant. Wilder was a quiet, smart man who worked hours behind the scenes to keep EMBA tournaments running flawlessly. Those who knew him best say that he would have been pleased to be remembered with an event that recognizes the achievements of players at every level of the game. Wilder was a PhD metallurgist as well as an investment counselor specializing in the metals markets. Within EMBA, Wilder contributed his time as EMBA tournament chairman. In 2001, he chaired the NAP qualifier tournament. At the time of his death, in 2002, he was acting vice president of EMBA.

The two-session Tom Wilder Flighted Pairs competition is held annually at the Summer EMBA tournament . Winners names are engraved on a permanent plaque that is displayed each year at the tournament.
